My First Helicopter Ride

To celebrate Tracy’s birthday in style, I convinced everyone that we should take a helicopter tour of the island. We used Blue Hawaiian Helicopter Company, which operates out of Hilo, and signed up for the “Circle of Fire Plus Waterfalls” tour. This was a fabulous 50-minute tour which took us over the lava fields, active volcano activity, a gorgeous view of Hilo Bay, and ended with a flight over a couple of waterfalls.

After signing (and weighing) in at Blue Hawaiian’s counter at the Hilo airport, we watched a safety video. Then we were assigned seats in the helicopter to properly distribute the weight. I got lucky and had a seat in the front next to Tracy, but everyone had good views thanks to the large windows.

As we took off, I was busy oohing and aahing, but my mom managed to capture this great shadow of the helicopter on the ground.

We flew over a macadamia nut orchard – our pilot Patrick told us that they plant a border of tall trees all the way around to protect the nut trees from the weather.
