I reorganize my closets for fun and relaxation. Few things make me feel better than cleaning out a junk drawer or streamlining an area of my home. Last weekend, I reworked my clothes closet. I used to have different categories on different-colored hangers (i.e., all of my casual short-sleeved shirts on white hangers, dressy short-sleeved shirts on blue hangers, sleeveless, long-sleeved casual, long-sleeved dressy, etc.). Within each category, everything was in color order (blacks, whites, grays, reds & pinks, oranges, yellows, etc.). I actually didn’t change that much, but I did decide to put all short-sleeved shirts together, and also all long-sleeved shirts together, still within color order. So my categories are now: sleeveless, short-sleeved, sports team shirts, concert black, long-sleeved, cardigans, jackets. I had been running out of certain colored hangers, so this move helped with that. Isn’t my life fascinating?
Next, while my husband was out getting his haircut, I reorganized his dresser as a surprise for him. It had gotten pretty messy in there! I refolded all his clothes and organized them into categories – heavy thermals together, lighter thermals together, ringer tees in their own stack… Now it looks beautiful and I am happy. (For the record, he had no problem with me doing that for him).
I also have a closet app on my iPhone. I took pictures of all my clothing, and everything is organized within the app by category. I can create packing lists from the app, and it’s also handy if I’m at a clothing store and want to see if an item goes with anything in my wardrobe. Here’s a screenshot of one of the pages in the app:
It starts as an itch in the back of my mind, a sense of mild chaos in some area of my home, and it builds, sometimes for a week or even a month, until I finally attack the area and restore or improve it. It may be a disease, but it’s a beautiful one if that’s the case, as it brings me a lot of pleasure. As the joke goes, I don’t have OCD, I have CDO – you have to put the letters in the correct alphabetical order!
