Afternoon in Dongdaemun

Domingos had two days off work this week for Veterans’ Day, so we took full advantage of the nice weather and headed out for some exploring. Yesterday, we went to the Dongdaemun area. Just outside the subway is the city’s east gate, Heunginjimun Gate. “Dongdaemun” translates as “Great East Gate,” and it’s pretty cool looking.

Then we headed up a small hilly park across the street, where I got a nice shot of N Seoul Tower.

We didn’t feel like going in any of the huge shopping areas around there, so instead we wandered over to the Dongdaemun Design Plaza and checked out the outside areas. When the weather is bad, we’ll definitely head back and see the indoor exhibits.

Next, we decided to make our way along part of the 11-kilometer long, manmade Cheonggyecheon Stream to where the Lantern Festival was taking place. Here is part of the stream near Dongdaemun Market:

We passed some interesting sites:

Apparently, this fast food restaurant had just opened that day, and there was a line out the door!

We also passed a block filled with tool stalls, and another filled with lights, lamps, bulbs, etc. We walked over 8 miles yesterday! I’ll put the lantern festival pictures in my next blog post.
